What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?: The inability to fix situations that are simply unfixable.
Where would you like to live?: In the woods, by water with good shelling, walking distance to a major city.
What is your idea of earthly happiness?: To find new challenges. To learn. To occasionally fall in love despite my best efforts.
To what faults do you feel most indulgent?: Expecting people to be logical. Expecting people to tolerate my need to always live a good story.
Who are your favorite heroes of fiction?: Stephanie Plum (What, you expected the English major to give you something intellectual here? Nope...you get a female bounty hunter with a pet hamster. Sorry).
Who are your favorite characters in history?: Paul Erdos, Richard Feinman, Wolfgang Laib, Ed Ruscha, Thomas Jefferson
Who are your favorite heroines in real life?: Lisa Randall, Any female poker player or bass player worth her salt
Who are your favorite heroines of fiction?: Hmm...apparently I was supposed to be distinguishing between men and women in the earlier question. Pass. Men and women the same, more or less. Just different plumbing.
Your favorite painter?: Ed Ruscha, Wolfgang Laib (not painter, but art), El Greco, All my NYC painting cronies
Your favorite musician?: Leonard Cohen
The quality you most admire in a man?: Genius, a backbone, a wicked sense of humor, a naughty streak, secretly soft
The quality you most admire in a woman?: Genius, a backbone, a wicked sense of humor, a naughty streak, secretly soft
Your favorite virtue?: Empathy
Your favorite occupation?: Poker player, musician, artist, writer, animal toilet (I'm lookin' at you, Jack Hannah)
Who would you have liked to be?: I don't even understand the question. If I could be someone else and then me again (soon), I suppose Paul Erdos would have been fascinating.
Your most marked characteristic?: I secretly live in my own head most of the day and very much like it that way.
What do you most value in your friends?: Loyalty. Honesty. Like family.
What is your principle defect?: Only one? Always need a challenge. Always think I can fix everything. Rely on logic even in non-applicable situations. Empathetic to strangers and animals to a fault.
What to your mind would be the greatest of misfortunes?: To die without ever having truly lived; to have inadvertently hurt someone without making amends; if Idiocracy actually comes true at some point ;-)
What would you like to be?: Again, I don't understand the question. I would like to be me, but with slightly more restraint and slightly better poker and math skills.
What is your favorite color?: White. Grey. Orange.
What is your favorite flower?: Dandelion. Morels (it KIND OF counts as a bloom). Peonies. Violets. Wildflowers.
What is your favorite bird?: Red-legged Seriema (Cariama cristata)
Who are your favorite prose writers?: At the moment, Rick Bragg, Flannery O'Connor, Feinman, Will and Ariel Durant
Who are your favorite poets?: Baudelaire, Chaucer, Dante, Byron
Who are your heroes in real life?: My parents; my genius brother; Galileo; Kepler; Anyone who puts themselves on the line for another or for truth.
Who are your favorite heroines of history?: Same. Again, don't get the woman/man distinction.
What are your favorite names?: Names? Like baby names? Weird. Don't know. Suppose I like Henry, Nora, Maude (yeah, I know). For humor, Dick Butkus and Dingell. ;-)
What is it you most dislike?: Ignorance. Aggression. Meanness. Ambivalence.
What historical figures do you most despise?: Pope Urban II
What event in military history do you most admire?: I hate it when it comes to that. Am thankful for those who serve, though, when it does.
What natural gift would you most like to possess?: Genius and an ability to understand the emotions of others (as an INTJ, I am very bad at that)
How would you like to die?: On my own terms. With no regrets. Maybe having just seen a quite nice sunrise or sunset.
What is your present state of mind?: Compliated. I hate having to think about emotions or favorites or death. Thanks, you bastard Proust Questionnaire.
