What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
To live without love.
Where would you like to live?
Somewhere with lots of people; a place where I can find my niche.
What is your idea of earthly happiness?
To have someone - or rather, a few someones - who understands me completely and loves being around me despite my [admitedly many] flaws.
To what faults do you feel most indulgent?
To a life talking about nothing and everything, all the time.
Who are your favorite heroes of fiction?
Young lovers who fight past every obstacle, simply because they believe love is more important than anything else.
Who are your favorite characters in history?
Anyone who was ever brave: Queen Elizabeth, Sigmund Freud, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, King Arthur; the list goes on.
Who are your favorite heroines in real life?
Mothers.
Who are your favorite heroines of fiction?
Atypical women; women who break all boundaries and teach us more about the real ways of women.
Your favorite painter?
Anyone who brings tears to my eyes - and that is an often occurence.
Your favorite musician?
Dashboard Confessional. A pop, 20th century answer to be sure, but the truth.
The quality you most admire in a man?
Compassion
The quality you most admire in a woman?
Maturity; the ability to deflect drama
Your favorite virtue?
Hope, although it is not exactly a virtue.
Your favorite occupation?
Reading about characters I wish I knew - or was.
Who would you have liked to be?
Someone worth loving.
Your most marked characteristic?
The spark of a vibrant personality, sharp and witty and entirely too bubbly for my own good, but within a dark, simmering soul, begging to be understood - the cliche of the century.
What do you most value in your friends?
Loyalty; keep my most important secrets, spread the trivial gossip.
What is your principle defect?
Seeming selfishness; I do not really like to talk about myself that much, I just want to be understood.
What to your mind would be the greatest of misfortunes?
Going through life without ever having known the most tender touch of a man.
What would you like to be?
Free and unalarmed.
What is your favorite color?
I do not have one. Colors cannot be pinned down in names. Yellow may be green, or red may be orange - it is unimportant.
What is your favorite flower?
Lilies. Because they float and they are angelic and they are, above all else, beautiful.
What is your favorite bird?
The hummingbird, because it flitters and twits.
Who are your favorite prose writers?
Jane Austen, as always.
Who are your favorite poets?
Walt Whitman, because he was always unafraid.
Who are your heroes in real life?
My mother, because she must be strong to put up with me; my dearest friend, Mel, because she has survived the bell jar and never looked back.
Who are your favorite heroines of history?
Elizabeth Bennet, because she was light and she knew what she wanted.
What are your favorite names?
Lily. When I am feeling capricious, Anastasia.
What is it you most dislike?
Selfishness. I cannot abide it, even at twilight.
What historical figures do you most despise?
History repeats itself, so every current leader of the world.
What event in military history do you most admire?
The Hiroshima Bombing. A triumph and a sorrow, all at once.
What natural gift would you most like to possess?
The ability to flirt.
How would you like to die?
In my sleep. Or - and this is selfish, please excuse me but I must say it - in a car crash when I am young, so people remember me as beautiful and full of possibilities.
What is your present state of mind?
Sorrow. Having been rejected is never a lovely thing.
What is your motto?
Everyone deserves kindness.
