What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?: Waking from a pleasant dream.
Where would you like to live?: So many places.
What is your idea of earthly happiness?: A home that is cosmopolitan but untainted by city life, and to have at my disposal all those whose company I enjoy, good food, and a library stocked to my tastes.
To what faults do you feel most indulgent?: To distraction in silly things.
Who are your favorite heroes of fiction?: Those of tragedy and romance, for they are the characters of suffering.
Who are your favorite characters in history?: Siddhartha, Julius Caesar, and Ernest Hemingway.
Who are your favorite heroines in real life?: Women who do not lose themselves in their womanliness---women who do not dissemble their hearts, but who do not let their hearts smother their minds.
Who are your favorite heroines of fiction?: Those who are passionate, but who are not ruled by passion.
