- What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?
- To rely on another other than myself for my way in the world
- Where would you like to live?
- Fully in any room that I occupy at the moment
- What is your idea of earthly happiness?
- Riding about with my ladies in our carriage on an early summer evening. The breeze off of Puget Sound masks the smells of the city, while we sit dressed in silk, lips painted, hair done up, and despite itself the city can't help but watch us come and go.
- To what faults do you feel most indulgent?
- I often care more for what people think than I would like.
- Who are your favorite heroes of fiction?
- Though not perceived as a hero persay, I enjoy the character Victor Frankenstein. I too create people.
- Who are your favorite characters in history?
- Dorothea Erxleben, Persephone, Anna Maria Von Schurman, and most recently, Abraham Lincoln.
- Who are your favorite heroines in real life?
- My ladies, who give me a purpose.

- Any woman who fought for what was owed to her, be it riches, men, or freedom.
- Your favorite painter?
- As a young girl in Munich, my father brought me to see Peter von Cornelius' "The Wise and Foolish Virgins." His work has always stayed with me.

- I was once brought to the concert of Eugène Ysaÿe by one of my patrons. It was one of the most magical nights of my life.
- The quality you most admire in a man?
- Humility. It is not a quality I see often in my line of work.
- The quality you most admire in a woman?
- Self-possession and wit.

- Sleeping - it is both luxurious and revitalizing

- Wouldn't we all like to be the Queen of England, but as that is not plausible, I am contented with myself.

- To keep my head about me, regardless of circumstance.

- The assumption that others have often possess ill intent.

- To be lacking in a house full of laughter, drink, and women.

- Gold, as it can be the filter to a beautiful summer day or the color of a bar in my vault.

- The only prose I read is that which I write inside my journals.

- I've never cared much for poetry; it makes life seems too beautiful.

- I am partial to Dorothea, as I knew one once and rather liked her.

- Although I was not present in America for The War of the Secession, it left such an impression on our consciousness that one has to admire it.
