What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?: To have everything and everyone you've ever loved taken from you, as I have. I know misery.
Where would you like to live?: I'm right where I want to be -- out in the wooded country, free to come and go as I please.
What is your idea of earthly happiness?: Oh, I don't know. Hot supper every now and then.
To what faults do you feel most indulgent?: I've got to rely on others to get by, but sometimes you have to do that.
Who are your favorite heroes of fiction?: I say the Jean Valjeans.
Who are your favorite characters in history?: When I was a boy I loved Archie Clement. Loved him.
Who are your favorite heroines in real life?: I can't say I know any. Do you? No, I take that back. We don't speak, but my daughter is good. She's a good person and a good mother to her children.
Who are your favorite heroines of fiction?: Why any woman who can stick around and put up with old, raggedy men like me. I think they might only be in fiction.
Your favorite painter?: I like to paint sometimes.
Your favorite musician?: Willie Nelson
The quality you most admire in a man?: Gumption
The quality you most admire in a woman?: Well who doesn't like a pretty girl?
Your favorite virtue?: Truth. You got to have truth.
Your favorite occupation?: I like to collect things. Anything that looks useful or interesting, I keep it.
Who would you have liked to be?: I would have liked to be a better father
Your most marked characteristic?: I'm old.
What do you most value in your friends?: My friends have all gone but I should like to meet them again.
What is your principle defect?: I don't have patience for rude people. You see them everywhere nowadays.
What to your mind would be the greatest of misfortunes?: To not see my daughter or grandchildren before I die, but then maybe it's better that way.
What would you like to be?: God. I'd do things a lot different.
What is your favorite color?: Copper
What is your favorite flower?: I prefer wild mushrooms. I can tell you all the mushrooms in the woods where I live.
What is your favorite bird?: Waterfowl. That's good eating.
Who are your favorite prose writers?: Faulkner, but I don't read much these days on account of my eye sight.
Who are your favorite poets?: Aw, I'm not into that poetry stuff.
Who are your heroes in real life?: Everyday I walk into town to stand on the corner there near the gas station. And everyday a few kind people will spare me a buck or two. They're heroes in my book.
Who are your favorite heroines of history?: I can't really tell ya off the top of my head.
What are your favorite names?: I like my name-- Gary. G-A-R-Y.
What is it you most dislike?: Disrespect. Can't stand it.
What historical figures do you most despise?: That Lyndon Johnson fella.
What event in military history do you most admire?: I don't admire any of it.
What natural gift would you most like to possess?: No, I don't need any more gifts.
How would you like to die?: I'd like to think I can't die. They haven't killed me yet.
What is your present state of mind?: I'm just plain tired.
What is your motto?: My motto is "Keep on with the love." That's my motto.
